Team Selden Defend International 14 POW
18/08/2010 00:00:00
The Selden sponsored pairing of Roger Gilbert and Ben McGrane have won the International 14 POW race for the second year running using the latest Selden Series 3 Intermediate Modulus mast and BC086 boom.
This year’s National Championship race was host by Hayling Island Sailing club and the 2 hour race was held in testing conditions with winds exceeded 25knots and large chop making for hard racing out in the bay.
Since returning from the World Champions where Roger and Ben finished 2nd they have worked closely with the design team at Seldén to further increase the performance of the Series 3 International 14 product. A new top mast with an increase in stiffness of 120% delivers impressive power in light winds and also works well for depowering the square top mainsail in strong winds by using the Cunningham to blade the sail. The result is blistering upwind speed!
Roger commented, ‘the work we have done since the World Championships is really encouraging and the Seldén mast with P&B sails is working really well. We had excellent power and speed off the line in the light winds at the start of the race to lead at the first windward mark, we were then able to depower during the race as the wind built through changes in kicker, cunningham and board height. Nothing else was required all the way up to 25 knots without any compromise on pace’.
Due to other sailing commitments Roger was unable to sail the Sunday where 3 races were sailed to decide the overall week winners. Ben recruited stand in helmsman John Pink who was also able to prove the pace and reliability of the new Seldén product, winning all 3 races in 18-20 knots of wind.
With the European Championships to be sailed this September it’s not too late to order this championship winning product, Seldén will aim to deliver all International 14 spar orders taken before 9th August prior to the Championship start next month.
